You may have already seen the ‘Campaign against SCCM‘ which talks about the use of the SCCM acronym for System Center Configuration Manager. I have to admit that internally we do use that acronym, along with SCOM, and I’m also guilty of its use on twitter. However you will not these those acronyms on this blog, which brings me onto standards and conventions that I will use.

Firstly I’m British, so my blogs will be written in British English meaning that a Data Center is Data Centre, Virtualization is Virtualisation etc. Secondly I’ll be adhering to standards that manufacturers set for their products. For System Center the following apply

Microsoft Operations Manager—MOM

Microsoft System Center Capacity Planner—SCCP

Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager—ConfigMgr

Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager—SCDPM

Microsoft System Center Essentials—SCE

Microsoft System Center Operations Manager—OpsMgr

Microsoft System Center Reporting Manager—SCRM

Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager—SCVMM

Microsoft Systems Management Server—SMS

(source)

.. and then also adding:

Microsoft System Center Updates Publishes—SCUP

Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager – SCMDM

Microsoft System Center Service Manager – SCSM

Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack – MDOP

Another blog I hear you say, well yes I’m afraid it is; another one to add to your already very long list in google reader. Whoops, big blog mistake number 1, making presumptions. One, I presumed that you use google reader – not too major really. Two, and this a big presumption, that you actually want to follow yet another blog, let alone this one.

Everyone blogs for loads of their own reasons and like most I have a whole host that have led me to setting this up. A few years ago I inherited an SMS 2003 install, well I say an install. The server systems were installed but the clients were not. I took this on and this is where it all started for me. I’m completely self taught, taking lots of information from other blogs and other sources. I installed SMS for the internal network and then when I moved teams installed it again in our data centre which already had MOM 2005 installed. Also deploying MS/HP updates and using OSD FP. After inheriting MOM and with the advent of System Center I’ve now deployed ConfigMgr, OpsMgr and SCVMM covering all our environments. Prior to ConfigMgr I’d also deployed HP RDP which is a cut down Altiris DS in our data centre. My future in IT lies at this level, putting the systems in place to proactively manage rather than fire-fighting. This blog is therefore a place for me to document what I’m doing as I do it. Recording my trials and tribulations over the coming years both for me as documentation and hopefully for others to gain from.

Subjects for now will be based around what I am using on a day to day basis, as well as picking up on what’s going on generally in the world of System Center. Longer term I’ll be setting up lab environments to test other features and scenarios.

The environments I manage are reasonably small in size although not without complexities. ConfigMgr is in native mode and we are using most features from the OSD to SCUP for custom updates from HP. Our internal aim for OpsMgr is to make it the central point for all our monitoring, replacing HP SIM for example so we use a vast range of management packs. We also use SCVMM to manage a number of virtual servers so I’ll be touching on that too.

Well that’s the intro to me and my new blog. Posts will start to follow shortly

Chris
